I have a 2012 Mazda CX-9 with "lifetime transmission fluid" and no dipstick or means of checking the fluid. I'd like to keep this vehicle for at least 200k miles, which would be about 12 years. How often should I change the transmission fluid for my peace of mind and to maximize the life of the transmission? If it helps, the transmission is an Aisin AWF-21 6-speed automatic. Show

What's your driving style? Are you doing a lot of short trips/stop-and-go, or is it mostly highway/sustained speed driving? B JoinedJul 7, 2015Messages1,025LocationNorth America
I recommend every 50,000. Ford doesn't recommend changing transmission fluid until 150,000 & let me tell you, that's way too long. I've seen multiple people who try to go that long & the transmissions start shifting hard & slipping around 100,000 miles. One guy I know made it to 150,000 on original transmission fluid & the dealer flushed the transmission & it started slipping on the new fluid as soon as he left the dealer. The recommended automatic transmission fluid on the 2011 Mazda CX-9 is Mazda Genuine JWS3309. Some of the products that You can use instead are Valvoline Full Synthetic Transmission Fluid Multi-Vehicle or Beck/Arnley Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid T-IV. Want to know what the transmission fluid capacity is on the CX-9 The fluid capacity on this vehicle happens to be a total of 7 US quarts. The fluid capacity happens to come in handy when You're replacing the fluid entirely. The engine in your 2009 Mazda CX-9 should be running when you perform a transmission fluid level check, otherwise it will be inaccurate. The video above shows where the transmission fluid dipstick is located in your CX-9 and how to check the transmission fluid level. If the transmission fluid level in your CX-9 is low, you need to add transmission fluid through the dipstick tube. When adding transmission fluid to your CX-9, be sure to add it slowly as it will fill up quickly and is difficult to remove excess fluid if you overfill. If you are having problems with the transmission in your CX-9, such as clunky shifting or hesitation, check the fluid level first - it is amazing how many drivers pay thousands of dollars for transmission work when a half quart of transmission fluid would have fixed the problem. Actually, the first question is “Do I need to change my transmission fluid at all?” For the answer, consult your MAZDA Owner’s Manual. Unless there’s a leak or a problem, some newer transmissions are designed to never need a fluid change. But let’s say your car does need a transmission fluid flush as part of preventive maintenance. The top reason to change it is to keep your transmission operating at its best. Like any other fluid such as engine oil, transmission fluid becomes less effective over time. Stop-and-go driving, towing or other high-stress conditions can shorten its life even further. Unlike other fluids, however, transmission fluid doesn’t just lubricate the transmission parts, it also acts as hydraulic fluid, helping keep the transmission cooler and helping with shifts. In a practical sense, the most important reason to perform preventive maintenance on your transmission comes down to dollars and cents: getting a transmission fluid flush might cost you a few hundred dollars, but a new transmission will cost thousands. |
