One of the saddest news from Samsung Galaxy S3 owners was the incompatibility of the device with Android KitKat 4.4.4 due to its "low" jig RAM. However, owners of a Galaxy S3 LTE version (available in Korea) have been able to update to this version and now, thanks to XDA, we can too.

The user arter97 of this well-known community has left to our delight the Android KitKat 4.4.4 ROM based on the Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE, which arrived a few weeks ago on the terminals. As we have said, the company itself indicated that they would be unable to upgrade to Galaxy S3 3G due to 1GB of RAM which, apparently, could not support the demand for the new software. This provoked the "anger" of the guys at XDA and they began to work on a port that they have already achieved and that we can enjoy in our terminal.

To do this, unsurprisingly, we need a Rooted Samsung Galaxy S3, but first of all, we must indicate that if we carry out this process, obviously we will lose all kinds of guarantee - and before starting, as always, we recommend carrying out a Backup- and it is possible that we brickee the terminal, something for which we are not responsible. However, the user who developed the ROM is known in the community for creating fairly stable builds and the feedback of those who have tried the ROM is quite positive, so here we go.

The devices compatible with this ROM based on the Korean firmware are the Samsung Galaxy S3 3G International (GT-I9300) and the Samsung Galaxy S3 SK-3G (SHW-M440S). The steps to install it are as follows:

  1. Make a backup and download the ROM from XDA, saving it to the phone's SD card.
  2. Turn off the terminal and restart in Recovery mode (press and hold the volume up, power and start keys simultaneously).
  3. Perform a complete wipe of the data to get a clean installation of the ROM with Android 4.4.4 KitKat.
  4. Flash the ROM through Recovery and then flash SuperSu

After restarting, we will have the latest ROM available for the Samsung Galaxy S3 on our device. As you can see, it is a simple process, although always you can take a look at the XDA thread in case you have any questions.

Do you want to get the latest features and apps on your Galaxy S3 I9300? Well, in that case you need to update your phone to Android 4.4.4 KitKat firmware. How to do that? A ported version of the stock and official KitKat software that has been recently released for the LTE variant of the SGS3 is now available for your I9300, which means that you can anytime choose to manually install Android 4.4.4 on your device. And for making things clearer enough, I will show you how to complete the update procedure during the guidelines from below.

The ported version of the stock Android 4.4.4 KitKat firmware has been developed by those of xda-developers so we should thank them for the present step by step guide. Now, since we are talking about a third party ROM, the update is not official – you are basically dealing with a custom ROM firmware that brings the stock and official Android system to your Galaxy S3 (with no other extra features, apps or capabilities). Therefore, this tutorial isn’t official as you will not apply the OTA release of KitKat on your SGS3 I9300, but a ported and dedicated custom ROM.

According to those who have already installed this ported firmware on the Galaxy S3 it seems that the software is running without bugs or lags. Moreover, there aren’t things that aren’t working properly and you can safely install the KitKat OS for daily use – the ROM is smoothly running on the S3 so you have nothing to worry about. Of course, stock KitKat features and UI will be installed on your phone, thus you will experience the stock Android system.

Since we are dealing with a custom ROM, for being able to update the same on your Android device, you have to prepare some things first. So, first of all root your Samsung Galaxy S3. By gaining root access you will unlock the internal system of your phone as the custom ROM will have to access the same. Then, you need to install a custom recovery image, such as CWM or TWRP recovery (use the latest version of these apps) – the custom recovery will replace the stock recovery and will establish a link between you and your phone’s internal system. So, the recovery menu will be used on the flashing process – do note that you can’t complete this tutorial without rooting and installing the custom recovery image.

But, all these are unofficial or custom operations that have nothing to do with Google and in our case with Samsung. Because of that, the warranty of your phone will get void. Unfortunately you can’t avoid this from happening, so keep in mind that after completing this tutorial you won’t be able to reclaim your warranty – if you will have problems with your device you will have to pay for the technical assistance in case you take your S3 back to service (or, instead you can try to fix your bricked Android device manually by using dedicated troubleshoot solutions).

Good; now before starting the update procedure you first have to backup your data. Remember that this is an unofficial operation and while completing the same, for properly applying the update, you will have to wipe the system of your Galaxy S3. That’s why a backup is a must, especially if you have important data saved on the internal storage memory of your phone. In that matter you can anytime use compatible backup and restore apps from Google Play or a cloud storage service in order to save everything you want – such as contacts, texts, call logs, messages, internet settings, EFS folder, market apps, the current ROM via Nandroid backup, images, videos, audio files and any other personal data, info or accounts.

A manual update method implies in using a computer – on the same you will have to download the Android 4.4.4 KitKat ported firmware that was made available for your Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300. Your phone and its USB cord must be near you because you will have to establish a connection between your devices at some point. On the computer you need to deactivate – do it only temporarily – all the security features (including antivirus, antimalware or Firewall tools). Also, on your device USB debugging option must be checked – you can achieve that from path “menu – settings – developer options”.

You can make things work only if you charge your phone’s battery before heading towards the guidelines from below. Do that especially if the battery power is currently less than 50%. If your Galaxy S3 gets turned off while you are trying to flash Android 4.4.4 KitKat OS, it might also get bricked. Also, note that the following steps are compatible only with the I9300 model of the Galaxy S3 so apply this tutorial only in the mentioned conditions – try not to mess things up.

How to Update Galaxy S3 I9300 with Ported Android 4.4.4 KitKat Firmware

  1. From here download the update file on your computer.
  2. Save the firmware on desktop and don’t unzip the same.
  3. Connect your Galaxy S3 with your computer via USB cord.
  4. Transfer the Android 4.4.4 KitKat OS from desktop to your phone’s SD card.
  5. Unplug the USB cable when done.
  6. Then turn off your device.
  7. Enter recovery mode on your Android smartphone.
  8. From recovery first off all apply a wipe: select “wipe data factory reset”.
  9. Return to main menu of recovery and then pick “wipe cache partition” followed by “wipe dalvick cache”.
