I’m about to install my CB radios in my 2021 Silverado 1500. I bought a hood mount for the antenna, the mount is a Firestik ss274a, anyone ever mount one before to their rig? If so can someone post a picture in the comments, looking for a good spot to mount it and having a bear of a time, in my old pickup I had a bedstake antenna mount and trying to avoid mounting in my bedstake again because of reception and range issues. Thanks again

What's going on that you can't mount it? Any pics? Depending on what antenna you run, I don't know if you'll get any better reception going from bedstake mount to fender/hood mount, but just make sure swr is low on all 40 and it'll be the best its capable of doing. Of course, if you REALLY want the best reception, a stainless quarter wave 102" whip centered off the back lip of the bed near the rear window would be best!

I was able to figure it out today on where to mount it, have to tweak the mount itself a little so it contours better to the body because it doesn’t sit complete flush with hood channel and the curve of the fender. My old truck I didn’t care how it looked because the truck was 10 years old so I was able to make it look good but with this being a brand new truck I wanna make it look some what professional looking haha. Now if I can just find a spot to run my coaxial wire through into the cab I’ll be all set, Just a quick look and I didn’t see a rubber grommet to run it through the firewall so may have to get creative

There's always a spot to run wire through, for the 2500's, there's a rubber "tit" sticking out on the passenger side, hard to see but its there. I assume the 1500 will have one in a similar place. You just cut the tip of it off and run your cable through, assuming you will either be soldering a pl259 on the end inside the cab, or using a ring connector crimp on the antenna side (so run it backwards from cab to antenna).
Take pics when you get it done!

I’m using a coaxial cable that already has the 259 connector, was hoping to find a spot that would fit the whole connector through without having to cut then re-solder but I’ll make sure post pictures, though I’m sure I’ll have to re-solder it anyways haha, good to know about the grommet, I figured there was one and I couldn’t see it thanks I’ll have to look now

What do you plan on using your CB for? Just curious. I just removed mine. The channels are mostly dead now save for a few local yahoos and many of the Jeeper Creepers out there are going with GMRS Radio to rag chew while on the trails. I run an emergency services radio in my truck as well as ham radio.

the land I hunt is all private timberland that’s permit access only and though not required it is highly recommended you run a CB in your rig while up there to keep tabs on the logging trucks and the equipment operators while your up there because the roads aren’t the best and you don’t wanna meet a loaded log truck on some of them haha, plus we’ve got a cross country trip coming up and I figured it’d be nice to have it installed before then

Where is the best place to mount a CB antenna on a pickup truck?

In terms of performance, it's hard to beat mounting an antenna in the middle of your pickup's roof. Why? This ensures it will be located at the highest point on your vehicle, which will maximize performance. It will also be installed in the middle of the truck's chassis.

Where do I mount my CB radio?

Ideally, the best place is in the center of your roof. Roof mounted antennas provide the best ground plane and a 360 degree radiating surface to transmit your signal. However, most people don't want to drill holes in the center of their roof. The next best location is to mount the antenna on the fender or trunk.

Do CB antennas need a ground plane?

A Groundplane is needed for any CB antenna to work, without it the antenna will not transmit very well and your SWR reading will probably be very high.
