Does translucent powder go on before or after foundation

Regardless of how much of a makeup pro you are, most of us are constantly on the hunt for hacks to make our foundation look as if it were our actual skin and stay on without touch-ups.

As we approach the warmer (and hopefully more sociable) summer months, achieving a seamless, non-slippery base is key in stopping our faces sweltering up and looking cakey - something that's often easier said than done, right?

Well, TikTok is doing what TikTok does best and providing us with a simple makeup technique to combat coverage woes.

User @goldenbeauty_xo took to the platform to share a less conventional makeup routine that sees products applied in a different order to the ones we usually follow, telling viewers, "If you wear makeup, watch! Change your whole routine and try this instead."

In the video we see the makeup pro use translucent powder BEFORE foundation, yup that's right, liquid on top of powder, with foundation applied as the very last step. Quite literally ripping up the rule book.

The TikTok user says, "Just see what happens and how amazing your f**king makeup is going to look, it's going to stay on 24-7 and it's not going to crease."

The video has racked up over 900k likes, with over 3,000 users sharing their experiences of trying out the hack.

One user commented: "As a woman who has oily skin… this has been a game changer."

Another wrote: "This is now my daily routine because it was so amazing!"

Setting powder is a godsend. It locks in foundation and concealer so that there are no cracks or ripples on your cheeks. Wearing it makes your makeup experience 100 percent better. But there's a catch. The powder isn't doing any good if you're using it the wrong way—and a lot of people are. We consulted with some of the top makeup artists in the business to discover the biggest mistakes you're making with setting powder.

Not knowing the differences between powders. Yes, there are four different kinds of powders. "I think a lot of people don't know the difference between powder products and what they are meant to do, says Beau Nelson, who works with Kristen Stewart and Katy Perry. "Mineral powders are meant to actually replace medium-coverage foundation. I don't generally recommend covering foundation with mineral powders unless you're going for a full-coverage look, since it tends to cake up when applied over foundation. When it comes to loose setting powders, they come in two forms: translucent and colored. Colored works to correct tone, brighten the face, and correct redness. Translucent powders are probably the safest bet since they don't change the color of the foundation and don't add coverage. Pressed powders add slightly more coverage than loose ones because they contain binders, and they can add a polished look to the skin when applied with a buffing motion to the face,"

Wearing a powder that weighs you down. After you've found the right setting powder, you have to make sure it's light. "Setting powder might only make the foundation look cakey if it's a heavier setting powder. The

is colorless and sets foundation without ever looking cakey," says Daniel Chinchilla, who works with Ariana Grande and Keke Palmer.

Not blending in your foundation before putting on powder. Valery Gherman, who works with Kate Upton and Chanel Iman, says blending in foundation seamlessly is key to great powder placement. "I tend to really blend and work the foundation into the skin with a blending brush until it feels one with the skin, so it doesn't feel like it's sitting on top of it as a separate entity," he says. "If any areas still feel too heavy, I prefer to pat down with a sponge to absorb any excess moisture before applying powder."

Do you put translucent powder over foundation?

Do you apply translucent powder after foundation? Yes, if you'd like to control oil and shine. If you need your makeup to last a long time or you have oily skin, translucent powder is perfect for you. Simply dip a powder puff brush into some translucent powder and tap off the excess.

When should you apply translucent powder?

After you apply any cream- or liquid-based products — like your foundation, blush, or even cream eyeshadow — you can use translucent powder to set them. This will help keep your makeup from creasing after a few hours. "I use translucent powder during an entire makeup application," Hoffman said.

How do you apply translucent powder after foundation?

After you've applied under-eye concealer, foundation, and your regular face concealer, apply a generous powder coat over it. Swirl your brush into the product, tapping the brush handle a few times to minimize fallout (this is less important if you're using a pressed powder, but really important if you're using loose).
