“If it scares me it means I’m supposed to do it,” says Erica Durance lead actress and producer of CTV’s huge hit, the medical drama Saving Hope.

The TV series was the most-watched Canadian drama of the 2011/12 broadcast year. “It is fun to be part of something that has so much heart. It is reality-based and I’m learning so much,” she says.

Durance was born in Calgary and started doing plays in church. “I fell in love with drama and performance,” says Durance.

Her career in film and television allows her to “put out good messages,” she says. Durance admits that “sometimes she wears too many hats and thankfully has a support system that helps her get through 16-hour days on the set.” She feels “lucky to have a different kind of job which has led to many great experiences.”

Television audiences and critics alike loved her portrayal of Lois Lane in the WB/CW series, Smallville. “Meeting Margot Kidder (the actor who played Lois Lane in the film) was a thrill of a lifetime. She was very complimentary,” says Durance.

Durance’s other notable roles include guest appearances on television shows including Harry’s Law, Charlie’s Angels and Stargate SG-1. Her resume has an impressive list of film credits such as House of the Dead, The Butterfly Effect 2 and Sophie.

Durance’s commitment to living a healthy lifestyle has won her many honours including Maxim Magazine’s cover girl for their October 2007 issue. In 2008, she was voted Number 1 by TV Guide’s Healthiest and Most Physically Fit Stars on Television, and in 2009 Entertainment Weekly’s Hotties’09: Your Top 25.

The best part of her job is “the moment from action to cut. Everyone on the team has their energy and skill set focused.”

Durance took time out of her hectic shooting schedule and invited Celebrity Spaces into her home.

Q: How would you describe your home in a few words?

A: It is a girl’s dream.

Q: Tell us about your home.

A: My home is in West Vancouver, B.C. My husband built it from drawings to design and colour. It is 7,000-square feet and has three levels. It has dark oak floors throughout. The kitchen has a Wolf stove, floor to ceiling cabinetry and an eight-person, wooden dining table. The basement is a family area with a theatre. The main floor is the socializing space.

Q: Who shares this space?

A: My husband David Palffy and I.

Q: What is your favourite room and why?

A: The kitchen is serene and has great energy.

Q: How would you describe your decorating style?

A: It is French Colonial mixed with modern. David is an artist. He created a comfortable area on each floor for me to read in. The interior colours are greys mixed with blues and whites to give the feel of the ocean. David loves to do the gardening in the beautiful garden he created. The shingles on the exterior give an East Coast feel.

Q: Weekends at home, what are we most likely to find you doing?

A: I work on most weekends so my husband is the executive chef. He is an amazing cook. I love the way he does salmon and his apple pie for dessert is delicious.

Q: If your walls could talk, what would they say?

A: “I’m not telling.”
