Show By: Dina DiMaggio, MD, FAAP When it comes to breast milk, how you store it depends on how soon you want to use it. Here are some helpful guidelines for storing your breast milk safely.
The Rule of 4'sWe know breast milk storage can be confusing, so here is a more conservative approach that you can also go by (and easily remember): 4 hours at room temperature and 4 days in the
refrigerator! Editor's Note: Although these breast milk storage guidelines are appropriate for babies born premature and those who are hospitalized, hospitals may have their own rules. If you have specific questions, discuss these guidelines with your baby's pediatrician and/or
hospital. Where We Stand:The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding as the sole source of nutrition for your baby for about 6 months. When you add solid foods to your baby's diet, continue breastfeeding until at least 12 months. You can continue to breastfeed after 12 months if you and your baby desire. How do you defrost breast milk from the freezer? To thaw frozen milk, hold the frozen bottle or bag under lukewarm running water. You can also thaw it in the refrigerator or in a bowl of warm water. Swirl the milk gently to mix. The fatty part of the milk may have separated.
How do you warm up a frozen breast milk bottle? You may thaw frozen breast milk directly from the freezer by placing it under warm running water, in a warm water bath, or in a bottle warmer. Doing so can only take a few minutes, but remember to keep the water warm and not hot or boiling to avoid burning your baby.
How long does breast milk take to defrost?Breast milk can be defrosted in the fridge, normally in around 12 hours. Alternatively, hold the bottle or bag of frozen milk under warm running water (a maximum of 37 °C or 99 °F). Don't leave frozen breast milk to defrost at room temperature.
How do you warm up chilled breast milk?Pour very warm (not boiling) water in a mug or bowl. Place sealed bag or bottle of breast milk in the bowl of warm water. The milk should be kept in a sealed container for warming. Leave the milk in the warm water for 1-2 minutes until breast milk reaches desired temperature.
