How long does bruising last after wisdom teeth removal

While the wisdom tooth extraction procedure takes place in just one appointment that is approximately two-hours long, the recovery can last for two to three weeks after. If complications arise, it may take even longer to properly heal from a wisdom tooth extraction. Keep reading to learn more about how long you can expect the recovery from wisdom tooth extraction to take.

What to Expect on Day 1

Immediately after your wisdom tooth surgery, you will likely experience significant discomfort, swelling, bruising, and bleeding. You should plan to rest for at least the first 24 hours. Use ice packs at 20-minute intervals to reduce swelling and relieve pain. Take all pain medications and antibiotics as directed. Until the blood clot forms over your extraction site, you should place moist, clean gauze to protect the socket and absorb blood. In most cases, bleeding will cease completely after the first 24 hours and you can stop placing gauze.

What to Expect in the First 3 Days

In the first two to three days after your procedure, you will experience swelling and bruising. This is normal, and most people are able to address the discomfort and swelling by applying ice packs or cold compresses to the face for 20-minutes at a time and taking prescription or over the counter pain medications as directed. Avoid applying heat to the area of the extraction site as this can lead to increased blood flow and further discomfort.

What to Expect in the First Week

Within the first seven days of treatment, you should return to the surgeon’s office to have the stitches removed if necessary. At this point, you should feel much better and see noted improvement in swelling and bruising. You should be able to resume your regular routine with some restrictions when it comes to driving, heavy lifting, and otherwise exerting yourself.

What to Expect After 7 to 10 Days

Within the first ten days, jaw stiffness and limitation in range of movement should be completely gone. If you are still struggling to speak, chew, yawn, or smile without pain, it’s time to contact our office. In order to ensure your recovery by this point, we encourage patients to start exercising and massaging the jaw joints after the first 48 hours. Gently open your mouth as far as possible and move the jaw from side to side. If you feel, see, or hear anything out of the ordinary when moving your mouth, stop exercising the jaw immediately. If you notice new bleeding or swelling after your attempt at jaw exercise, call your oral surgeon. In addition to exercising the jaw by performing a range of movements, you can also massage the jaw joints to relieve pain and allow for more comfortable motion. Gently massaging the jaw joints for a few minutes at a time can greatly improve comfort and range of jaw movement.

What to Expect After 2 to 3 Weeks

After two or three weeks, your extraction site should be healed over, any bruising and swelling should have subsided, and you should have a full range of jaw movement. If you are still experiencing pain or discomfort after the first three weeks, please call your oral surgeon right away.

Recovery time after the extraction of wisdom teeth  varies from person to person and can depend largely on the type of extraction that was required. To minimise disruption to your day-to-day activities it is important to follow the post-operative instructions given by your dentist.

There are some other helpful things you can do to aid recovery following tooth removal and to experience pain free dentistry.

What symptoms might occur following treatment?

  • Numbness: Immediately after surgery you may still be numb from the local anaesthetic for several hours and you should be careful to avoid biting these areas. Sometimes numbness can persist for extended periods of time. Your dentist or surgeon will monitor this.
  • Swelling: This usually peaks two to three days after surgery and begins to subside after four to five days. The amount of swelling will depend on how difficult the extractions were. An ice pack can be used to help reduce swelling.
  • Discomfort: This is to be expected after surgery. You may be prescribed some painkillers, which you should take as required. Avoid aspirin as this will increase bleeding (see below).
  • Bleeding: It is normal to have some bleeding from the surgical site. You will be provided with gauze packs, which can be used to bite down on and apply direct pressure to the sites. If bleeding is persistent or you are worried, contact your dentist or surgeon.
  • Bruising: It is normal to have some degree of bruising on your cheeks once the swelling has gone down. These will fade after a few days.
  • Infection: Although uncommon, infection can occur. This can present approximately three to four days after surgery – as late swelling, pain, and/or discharge. If you suffer infection, you may be prescribed antibiotics; it is important to complete the course, even in the absence of problems.

How long does it take to recover from wisdom tooth removal?

The greater the impaction of your wisdom teeth, the more complicated the removal will be. This can increase the time it takes to recover from the surgery.

Broadly speaking, it can take four to seven days to recover from wisdom tooth extractions, although some symptoms can take up to two weeks to resolve completely.

You may have stitches placed after your extraction(s) which will usually dissolve or fall out after seven days; otherwise they will be removed by your dentist or surgeon.

How to make the recovery from wisdom teeth removal faster and easier?

There are some things that you can do to make recovery from wisdom tooth removal a little faster or easier:

  • You must avoid smoking or consuming alcohol for at least 48 hours after surgery. Otherwise you increase the chance of getting dry socket – a delay in the healing of the site that can cause significant pain and discomfort.
  • Try an all-liquid diet for the first couple of days like soup and smoothies. Avoid hard or crunchy foods to prevent trauma to the surgery site and avoid unnecessary discomfort. Hot foods should also be limited as they can increase the amount of bleeding.
  • Do not use a straw for 48 hours. Drinking from a straw can disrupt the natural formation of a blood clot at the extraction site and delay proper healing.
  • Avoid any strenuous activity for the first two to three days.
  • Use an ice pack on the sides of your face to ease discomfort and help with swelling. This should be applied for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off during the first 24 hours.
  • Saltwater mouth rinses used after 24 hours, will help to keep the surgical site cleansed and improve healing.
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated to help minimise bleeding.
  • Be as sedentary as you possibly can for the first two or three days after surgery as movement can increase blood flow.
  • Change your dressing/mouth pads regularly to maintain hygiene and soak up the excess blood.

If you have any questions, difficulties or concerns after your wisdom tooth removal surgery, do not hesitate to contact your dentist or surgeon, as they will be able to advise you.

Is it normal to bruise 4 days after wisdom teeth removal?

It is common to swell and bruise. Swelling is usually at its worst 48–72 hours after the surgery, and then it begins to improve. Bruising may occur over a few days and resolve within 2 weeks. Ice helps.

Why is my face bruised after wisdom teeth removal?

This is a normal reaction to surgery. Thirty-six hours following surgery, the application of moist heat to the sides of the face is beneficial in reducing the size of the swelling. Some patients, especially those taking aspirin or a blood thinner, may experience cheek or jaw bruising after 24-48 hours.

How long does it take bruising to go away after dental surgery?

Your face will start to bruise after the swelling has gone down after dental work. The swelling usually lasts around 24 hours and then the bruising could last up to 10 days.

What does 5 days after wisdom teeth removal look like?

Mild to moderate swelling and bruising may still be present. Avoid strenuous exercise, lifting, or bending, and keep a steady intake of nourishing foods such as yogurt, soup, apple sauce, cottage cheese, and protein shakes. Days 5-7: By now, most of the swelling, discoloration, and soreness should be minimal.
