What is CPR and why do I need to know it?CPR or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is an emergency procedure in which the heart and lungs are made to work by compressing the chest overlying the heart and forcing air into the lungs. CPR is used to maintain circulation when the heart has stopped pumping on its own due to the victim going into cardiac arrest. The heart pumps oxygenated blood from the heart to the brain and vital organs, therefore CPR keeps the body working at maximum function despite cardiac arrest. CPR / AED training is the most basic of medical training and you do not need to be a health care provider to benefit from receiving a CPR certification. Most AHA accredited CPR classes take 4 hours or less to complete and your CPR / AED certification is valid for 2 years. Types of CPR courses availableThere are a wide variety of CPR courses available and are tailored to your specific needs. There are courses that are specific to healthcare providers as well as lay people. There are courses that cover first aid as well as those that are more comprehensive to pediatric CPR. Determine which course you need by focusing on why you are registering for CPR training. Are you required for your degree?
