The General Knowledge test for your Commercial Driver’s License for the state of Florida is about to start. You only have an hour and you have to get 40 of the 50 questions correct or you fail. If you fail, you have to waste another entire day going to the DMV and miss out on getting started in your new career. Did you do everything you could to prepare for this moment? Well, you won’t even get to the exam if you don’t have the right paperwork. First of all you’ll need a signed certificate from a licensed medical examiner, as listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. This is to prove that you are physically qualified to drive a commercial vehicle. The certification typically lasts two years unless you have a condition that requires monitoring like high blood pressure. Then you also need to make sure you have a valid driver’s license and proof of citizenship or lawful permanent residency. Usually a social security card, green card, or birth certificate will do just fine. Once that is all together, you’ll want to start practicing for the exam. It’s imperative that you reference the official Florida commercial driver’s manual and then take as many practice tests as you need to feel comfortable with the material. Again, you don’t want to have to go back to the DMV more that once and the questions can be difficult. The tests we offer have questions that are taken almost directly from the real exam so you will have the prep you need to get out on the road and start earning money from your driving. Want your commercial driver’s license in Pennsylvania? The General Knowledge Exam given by the Department of Transportation (DOT) in Pennsylvania is 50 tricky multiple-choice questions long. You have only one hour and if you get less than an 80% (that’s 40 questions right) you fail the test. Failure means you have to come back to take the test another day — you can’t take it more than once in a 24 hour period. That’s rough if you already were taking time off of work on a weekday to head into the office for the test. It’s important not to waste time. You want to pass on the first shot. To do that, you’ll need to pick up the official Pennsylvania Commercial Driver’s Manual and figure out how the questions on the test work. Your best bet is to take some of our CDL General Knowledge practice tests. Our tests feature questions that are very similar, if not identical, to the real thing. And with hints and performance tracking, you’ll see just what you need to work on to gain the confidence you need to pass on your first visit. But before you even see the test you need to make sure you have all your paperwork in order. The first thing they’ll want to check at the DOT is your DOT card. This is also known as a medical examiner’s certificate and can only be obtained by seeing a licensed medical examiner as listed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. This proves you are physically qualified to drive a commercial vehicle in Pennsylvania. Then you’ll also need proof of your citizenship or permanent legal residency status. For this, a green card, social security card, or birth certificate will work. Then lastly you’ll want to make sure you have a standard current valid driver’s license. With all the paperwork set, and after you’ve prepared properly for the exam, you should be able to sweep in and out of the DOT with a Commercial Driver’s License ready to go.
