Knowing how to delete all emails in Gmail will allow you to have a fresh start with your email account, whether it's full or if you just want a clear-out. Though free webmail services don't restrict storage space as much as they did in the early years, clearing your inbox can still come in handy for a number of reasons.
Maybe your inbox has become cluttered over the years, or maybe you've archived all your emails offline and want to clear up some web space. Whatever the reason, it's a relatively simple task to start afresh in Gmail. Here's our guide on how to delete all emails in Gmail.
1. Select the category of email you want to delete
Gmail segments email into Primary, Social and Promotions categories.
The easiest way to delete all emails in Gmail is to tackle each category one by one, and I’m going to demonstrate with the “Promotions” segment for the purposes of this tutorial. Select the tab you want to clear with a click.
2. Press the tick box to select all
Nestled between the search bar and the tab selection is a small tick box highlighted above. Tick it, and every email on the page will be selected. But if you have more than 50 emails to delete, that won’t get everything, so we'll deal with that in our next step.

Once you press the tick box, everything on the page (aside from the inbox ads) will be selected, but an easily missable text will also appear above the tab selection: “All 50 conversations on this page are selected. Select all X conversations in Promotions.” Press the second sentence and everything in the category will now be highlighted as ready for deletion.
4. Hit the delete button
Press the fourth icon along underneath the search bar — it’s shaped like a trash bin. You’ll get a popup asking you if you’re sure you want to delete that many emails, so make your decision.

If you have a lot of emails, this will take a little while. I had only 3,404 to delete and it still took around 15 seconds.
As you can see below, once the process is complete, you get a little confirmation pop-up in the bottom left-hand corner. Note, too, that this doesn’t seem to have deleted everything, but a quick refresh revealed everything was really gone.

You don’t need to do anything more, so consider this an optional step, but your deleted emails will sit in your trash folder for 30 days before Google actually deletes them.
If you want to expedite the process, you can head to the Trash folder and empty it manually. Once done, repeat steps 2-6 with the Primary and Social tabs, and your Gmail will be completely empty.

You can also search for specific words in the subject line by typing subject: ahead of your keywords. If you want to search for emails with attachments, type has:attachment in Gmail’s search box.

Step one is done: You’ve collected all the emails you want to delete. If you have a bulging email inbox, you probably see a ton of results.
Don’t worry if you get a few hundred or even a few thousand results. You may want to run for the hills at the thought of deleting 50 pages’ worth of emails. First, check the box underneath the search bar. This pops up a message letting you know how many pages are selected. Tap on Select all conversations that match this search.

Yahoo users: Here’s how to delete thousands of emails at once
Just like Gmail, Yahoo Mail also lets you filter your search bar. It’s not as easy as typing a code into the search bar, though. You’ll have to tap on Advanced Search, which lets you search by these filters:
- Sender
- Recipient
- Subject
- What it contains
- Date
- Folder
- Type of email (like starred or unread)
- Image
- Attachment
In the current version of Yahoo, you can use these filters to mass delete emails. Let’s say you want to clean out all the unread emails. (After all, if they were important, you would have read them already.)
In this case, look to the left side of your email inbox. Go to the Smart Views drop-down menu. Next, tap on Unread. Now, all the read messages are filtered away, so you can collect every unread email in your inbox.
You may find thousands or even hundreds of results. No worries: Just click on the Select All checkbox and hit the Delete button to clear them away.
Now, everything you didn’t want is discarded in the Trash folder. If you want to clear them permanently, navigate to the Trash folder and select All Emails to delete them for good.
Repeat this process for any other kind of email you want to clear out of your Yahoo account. With this nifty trick, you’ll save hours of work.

So, let’s say you’re ready to start filtering. It’s easy: Just go to your inbox and hit Home. Look to the right and tap on the filter icon.
Pick the filter that best matches the types of emails you want to delete. You can even narrow down your filters by tapping the three dots at the top of the screen. Hit Refine your search to add more parameters.
Sadly, there isn’t a snappy way to cut them immediately. Instead of clicking a nifty button, you’ll have to press and hold the Shift key. Click the first email, keep holding down Shift, click the last email and then hit Delete.
