Growing up, one of my favorite summer traditions was driving up to Door County, a narrow peninsula in Wisconsin lined with quaint, small towns. We always stopped at Wilson's, an old fashioned ice cream parlor, for a scoop of my favorite strawberry ice cream. The sweet berry flavor of this Strawberry Frozen Yogurt brings me right back to my childhood! These days, frozen yogurt is my summer favorite. Unlike homemade ice cream, there's no cooking involved so it's quicker and easier to make. It's really just a matter of stirring together a few delicious ingredients. And once you get a basic recipe down, it's fun to experiment with different flavor combinations. IngredientsThese easy frozen yogurt recipe only requires four ingredients! Here's what you'll need:
Because this recipe is so basic, make sure to use the best quality ingredients. For the creamiest results, I recommend using full fat plain yogurt. While you can use nonfat, it won't be as rich, tangy, and full-flavored. You'll also want to make sure to use the sweetest, freshest berries you can find. It will really make a difference in the end result. You'll Also NeedThis recipe also requires an ice cream maker. I love my Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker! It's super simple to use, and I put mine to work mine year round, so it was definitely worth the investment. Tip: store the bowl insert in your freezer so you can make this Strawberry Froyo whenever a craving strikes! How to Make Strawberry Frozen YogurtThis recipe is incredibly easy. The ice cream maker pretty much does all the work for you! You'll start by whisking together the yogurt, sugar, and vanilla extract. Next, you'll mash some fresh strawberries (make sure to leave some small chunks), then stir them into the yogurt. Before going any further, it's imperative that you refrigerate this yogurt mixture for at least two hours. If you don't, it may not solidify once you add it to your ice cream maker. If you have an ice cream maker like mine, you'll also need to freeze the inner bowl. I recommend freezing it overnight for best results. Or you can be like me, and keep it stored in your freezer so its always ready to go! After the yogurt mixture has chilled for a few hours, transfer it to your ice cream maker. You'll want to process it according to your own machine's instructions (each one is a little different). You'll know that it's done when it has a soft serve texture, like in the photo below. Once it's reached the desired texture, transfer your frozen yogurt to a freezer proof container. Then, freeze it until it's solid. If you can't wait, you can sample it right away. It will have a pretty soft texture though. You can store this homemade Strawberry Frozen Yogurt recipe in the freezer for about a month or so, although I seriously doubt it will last that long! Frequently Asked QuestionsStill have questions? Here are the answers to some popular questions I've received about this recipe: Can you use Greek Yogurt to make frozen yogurt?I don't recommend using Greek Yogurt to make this recipe, because it's super thick. One of my readers tried it, and their ice cream maker stopped mixing before their froyo was the right texture. Can you use nonfat yogurt to make Strawberry Frozen Yogurt?Yes, you can use nonfat yogurt to make this recipe. However, I recommend using full fat yogurt, because the end result will be creamier and will have more flavor. Do you need to use an ice cream maker? This recipe will turn out best if you use an ice cream maker. As the yogurt freezes, ice crystals start to form. The constantly mixing ice cream maker breaks up the crystals, leading to a smoother, creamier texture. If you do try to make this recipe without a machine, make sure to stir the froyo frequently as it freezes. Serving IdeasLooking for something fun to serve your Strawberry Frozen Yogurt in? Turn the machine on; pour the mixture into freezer bowl, and let mix until thickened, about 20 to 25 minutes. The frozen yogurt will have a soft, creamy texture.
Can I just freeze yogurt to make frozen yogurt?Frozen yogurt is just ice cream by another name: a frozen dairy dessert made with yogurt instead of milk and cream. You could, if you wanted, make frozen yogurt with nothing more than yogurt itself. Stick some plain full-fat yogurt in an ice cream machine and give it a churn.
