This review pertains to the HALLMARK release of "Perry Como Sings Merry Christmas Music". The material itself warrants 5 stars and this is a classic Christmas album that has stood the test of time for over 50 years. But the poor sound quality of the Hallmark release is why I'm rating this CD 1 star.

I have several copies of this album on LP, 45, cassette and CD, plus the collected songs on other Christmas CD releases on RCA/BMG/Sony.THIS HALLMARK COMPANY CD HAS THE WORST SOUND QUALITY OF ALL OF THEM. It is labeled "Original Recording" on the cover, but that doesn't mean remastered, and it is definitely NOT FROM THE RCA MASTER TAPES.

This Hallmark CD was not issued by RCA/BMG, Camden, or Sony, the companies that have the original masters. RCA was Perry Como's original record company. Nor is this the same "Hallmark" which is famous for their cards, ornaments, and Hallmark Hall of Fame TV specials.

The Hallmark company that issued this CD is a foreign company, and this CD is marked "Made In The Netherlands" under the UPC bar code. Which is odd because the company's website (pickwickgroup.com) identifies itself as a British company, and laughably boasts (this is copied verbatim from their web page):

"the company has often been at the forefront of the British music market. From humble beginnings in the West End of London, Pickwick grew into the largest player in the budget field, one of the first companies to launch a dedicated budget label (Hallmark), subsequently offering the expertise learnt to such major companies as CBS, RCA and Walt Disney. Pickwick was one of the first companies to have in place exclusive licensing deals with the major record companies, one of the first to embrace the then new medium of the compact disc, the first to release product directly aimed at the childrenโ€™s market and undertaking an extensive classical recording programme that was the envy of the industry."

Wow, it's great to know that CBS, RCA and Walt Disney learned a thing or two from Pickwick/Hallmark's generous offer of their expertise.

Despite these ridiculous claims from Hallmark about their company being "the envy of the industry", THIS CD HAS VERY POOR SOUND QUALITY compared to the official RCA releases. It sounds like it was copied from a consumer-level product/an old copy of the Camden LP, with the treble control rolled down to suppress surface noise. The sound quality is dull. There is a minor amount of bass in the dynamic range, but little clarity with the treble. These songs all sound so much better on Perry's "Complete Christmas" collection, also available here on amazon, and I recommend buying that and avoiding this Hallmark release like the plague.

I compared the sound on this Hallmark CD to some of the other, official RCA/BMG CD reissues. This album was previously issued on an RCA Camden CD, a couple times, and the sound quality on that is better, although not as good as the remastering on the "Complete Christmas" 3-CD set. The tracks have also appeared on some of the previous RCA/BMG Christmas compilations, all are better sound quality than this Hallmark release.

All of the official RCA/Camden/Sony CD releases of these songs are still available here on amazon either new or used and are good purchases, but this Hallmark CD should be avoided.

This was one of the great Christmas albums my parents played every year while I was growing up. And it's probably one of the ones they heard growing up as well. Even as a child, I remember Perry Como's voice coming across like a friendly neighbor -- not as a voice faraway in another time, but like a good friend you may know. All of the songs are sweet, melodic, and almost hypnotic in a very Christmasy kind of way.

Perry Como begins with his classic rendition of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" and does so as naturally as if he had written it himself. Most people find "The Twelve Days of Christmas" to a be quite frankly a very annoying song, but Como makes it sound as easy to enjoy as anyone's favorite Christmas carol. His version of "Frosty the Snowman" is my personal favorite of that song. It ranks right up there with Jimmy Durante's immortal rendition.

I also recommend Perry Como's "red" Christmas album.

In my opinion you can't have Christmas celebrations w/ out this Perry Como treasure, what household didn't have it playing throughout the season, as we "Baby Boomers" were growing up. I found his voice to be strong; and consistent, clear; not muffled in any way.The volume on all tracks were the same; no need for adjustments, and the list of songs included is the same as the vinyl purchased so many years ago. I've owned the LP, Cassette and now the CD; and this title just gets better w/ age. I highly recommend it to anyone who remembers fondly hearing these songs played during the celebrations of their youth; and who might wish to re-create those joys today, I do not believe that you will be disappointed.

I listened to this recording as a youth; it was one of my two favorite Christmas albums. Perry Como has a good, smooth voice. So glad to find it on CD.

When I was a kid in the late '50s-early '60s, Our family listened to this every year when we decorated the tree. Hard-to-find now, but worth the search. A classic. Even those who haven't heard this album before should love it as it includes several Christmas songs that are rarely heard, such as the lovely C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S, which gives special meaning to each of the letters. When I heard this as a kid, I didn't realize that this album was originally a compilation of recordings from the late '40s-early '50s. I looked for this in stores and used CD/DVD outllets to no avail, then Amazon came through for me. Thanks, Amazon, for helping to preserve my Christmas memories.

THE VERY BEST CHRISTMAS MUSIC ALBUM OF ALL TIME.

A friend of mine told me about this. It has a Christmas
song on it that I have never heard before. I bought it specifically
for that one song that I was not familiar with. The song takes each
letter from the word CHRISTMAS, and has a verse that depicts what
that letter stands for. Well worth it for just for that song alone.
I am not a big Perry Comom fan, this is nice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely Christmas slbum

I'm always on the look out to add to my ever expanding Christmas music collection and wasn't dissapointed with this. It's a lovely album, quite traditional and old fashioned sounding but in a good way. I like a lot of the more modern Christmas songs but find these older recordings (in the style of Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, etc) much more Christmassy. For the price it's brilliant.
