Detailed DescriptionTaking deposits for spring crop of purebred St. Croix ewe and ram lambs. Lambs were born in April and will be available beginning in August. St. Croix are a rare breed of hair sheep native to America. They are raised primarily for meat and have a docile temperament. Adult weight is 125-165#. St. Croix are VERY EASY KEEPERS. Among their many positive traits: Highest Parasite Resistance Other benefits of St. Croix: Traditionally the tail is left long, so NO NEED FOR TAIL DOCKING. St. Croix produce easily on grass and/or hay, so NO NEED FOR GRAIN. Because we don't dock tails or feed grain we give NO ROUTINE CDT SHOTS. They are extremely aggressive foragers towards brush, weeds and anything with a thorn on it. They are our primary tool for controlling woody sprouts in the numerous new silvopasture areas that we are developing across the farms. Lambs are naturally weaned by their mother on pasture. They are moved every two days across our various farms behind electric polybraid. They get a high selection of numerous plants ranging from tree leaves, weeds, clovers, various grasses, weeds, vines and anything with a thorn on it. Due to their small mouth they are extremely efficient at removing leaves that are inaccessible to our cattle. Grass finished lambs are sold at 100-120 lbs live weight, hanging weight is 50-60 lbs. What are St Croix sheep used for?The breed is believed to be descended from African sheep that were brought to the Caribbean on slave ships, and is a breed of hair sheep which does not grow wool. The St Croix is a hardy tropical breed known for its parasite resistance, and is raised primarily for meat production.
What is the gestation period for St Croix sheep?The average gestation duration is 150 days. Both sexes of the St. Croix are precocious sexually. The males reach puberty as early as four months and the females breed to lamb at one year of age.
Can you milk St Croix sheep?Good Milking Ability – St. Croix ewes exhibit well formed udders and bags. The ewes produce good quantities of milk and have become popular in certain areas of the US for cheese production. Their milk is high in butter fat content.
