Star wars rangers of the new republic

"Some of that will figure into future episodes, I'm sure, of the next iteration of Mandalorian."

Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic is seemingly on hold, with comments from LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy suggesting that ideas for the spin-off may be 'absorbed' entirely into The Mandalorian.

Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic was announced just under a year ago, with many fans believing at the time that it would likely star The Mandalorian's Cara Dune, played by Gina Carano. However, recent comments made by Kennedy in an interview with Empire Magazine (as shown in a clipout on Imgur) seemingly suggest that, at present, the show isn't moving forward in its production schedule.

"We'd never written any scripts or anything on that," says Kennedy in the interview before further stating that, "some of that will figure into future episodes, I'm sure, of the next iteration of Mandalorian." While Kennedy's comments seem to show a bleak future for Rangers of the New Republic, it's important to note that there has not yet been any official confirmation from Disney stating that the show has been canceled.

That being said, for many Star Wars fans, Kennedy's comments may not come as much of a surprise. Alongside the fact that both Disney and LucasFilm have been relatively quiet about the show since announcing it last year, a previous article published by Variety in May reported that the show wasn't in active development.

While Disney stopped short of announcing that Rangers of the New Republic would heavily feature Cara Dune, a potential role in the show for the character would have become far less likely following a fallout between Disney and Dune actor Gina Carano. Carano was let go from her contract with LucasFilm back in February following social media post by the actress that Lucasfilm called "abhorrent and unacceptable."

While the future may not look too bright for Rangers of the New Republic, Star Wars fans can still look forward to the upcoming release of The Book of Boba Fett. The series is set to debut on Disney+ on December 29. In the meantime, make sure to check out the latest trailer for the show. Almost exactly a year ago, Lucasfilm announced a huge production schedule for a range of upcoming Star Wars movies and shows. Among them was a spin-off for The Mandalorian that was to be called Rangers of the New Republic. However, like several of those announced projects, they may never see the light of day.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy (who recently renewed her term) stated that no scripts had been written for the show. “Some of that will figure into future episodes, I’m sure, of the next iteration of The Mandalorian.”

This all but confirms that the show is doomed to remain unproduced or at best has been indefinitely delayed for retooling. Kennedy’s comments regarding incorporating the show’s elements into The Mandalorian, however, do not inspire hope for the series.

A major factor in the fate of the planned show is that of Gina Carano. The former MMA fighter was fired from Lucasfilm after a series of transphobic tweets were condemned by the company who referred to Carano’s comments as “abhorrent and unacceptable.” It was understood that Carano’s character, Alderaanian rebel “dropper” Cara Dune, was to be a major component of the show. Her absence robs the show of its potential star meaning that if it is not cancelled outright, a huge redrafting effort would be needed for it to survive.

Recently another Star Wars project has also faced the potential chopping block. That of Patty Jenkins’ feature film Rogue Squadron. Reportedly, creative disagreements between Jenkins and the Lucasfilm’s Live Action Development and Production team have stalled production on the film which was slated to begin shooting in the new year.

It is important to note that at no point has Lucasfilm specifically stated that either of the productions have been “cancelled” as such, but evasive language has always been the Hollywood norm to soften the blow of bad press.

Although Carano is gone for good, Cara Dune may yet live on. While the character has been notably absent from much of the merchandise and promotion for The Mandalorian and Star Wars in general, there is a possibility that the role may be recast. Again, no word from Lucasfilm on how this will play out. As with all things, the force shall make things clear.
