What herbs are good for immune system

In light of the current outbreak of the Coronavirus, we wanted to support you and your family in staying healthy this winter in whatever way we can!  You should certainly be following all the current guidelines your local and state health departments put forward, but we can also make sure we are at our healthiest to support our body and immune system! In addition to healthy lifestyle practices - including a sensible diet, exercise, enough sleep and low stress - many common herbs can keep our immunity strong through the cold and flu season.

Bastyr's naturopathic medicine department, says these seven medicinal herbs (some of which may be in your kitchen right now) can help support your immunity:

  1. Elder (Sambucus)
    Elder helps the body form powerful mucosal surfaces, strengthening our first line of defense against cold and flu. “Elder strengthens that tissue and helps make it more resistant, so the virus can’t attach and replicate as easily,” says Dr. Brammer. Elder is also diaphoretic, she explains, “which means it induces sweating, it increases white blood cell activity and actually increases your body temperature just a little bit, which means the virus has more difficulty reproducing.” Elderberry is often taken as syrup or in capsules, while elderflower is often infused in a tea to ease congestion.
  2. Yarrow (Achillea)
    Like Elder, yarrow is diaphoretic. Yarrow is also anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial, and its bitter quality aids in digestion. It is astringent, meaning it retains water in the body and tightens the gaps between cells to slow virus mobility across tissues. Yarrow can also help alleviate symptoms once you’ve caught an illness. “If you have congestion, I love this in a tea,” says Dr. Brammer.
  3. Mint (Mentha)
    “Mint is such a great medicine; it does everything,” says Dr. Brammer. Mint has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. It can be used to relax tight muscles and reduce gas or bloating, and its analgesic properties help reduce pain. Mint can be taken as a tea, or by adding the essential oil to hot water and inhaling the steam, using a towel over your head to create a steam tent.
  4. Boneset (Eupatorium)
    “This one is great for flu, when you get that deep ache and you can’t even go to sleep because your body aches so much,” says Dr. Brammer. In addition to alleviating aches, boneset is diaphoretic and stimulates the immune system. It has astringent qualities in small doses and laxative qualities at higher doses. It is typically taken in either a tincture or tea.
  5. Yerba Sante (Eriodictyon)
    “Yerba Sante is incredibly medicinal — great for your lungs and your respiratory system,” says Dr. Brammer. Yerba Santa may be used as a bronchodilator to help alleviate cough and is sometimes prescribed by naturopathic physicians for asthma relief. Yerba Sante is a “drying herb” and is recommended for wet rather than dry cough. It is typically taken as a tincture or a tea.
  6. Thyme (Thymus)
    Thyme is ubiquitous in the kitchen but less well-known for its medicinal qualities. “If you’re ever at home and coming down with the flu and you don’t know what to do, make some thyme tea,” says Dr. Brammer. Thyme has anti-inflammatory and calming effects. With its mild scent and flavor, thyme is great for kids or adults when used in a steam tent to help with cough and congestion.
  7. Chamomile (Matricaria)
    “Chamomile does everything. It’s a tonic to the nervous system; it is anti-viral, antimicrobial, great for the respiratory system, and it tastes good. This is one herb I think everyone should have in their cabinet,” says Dr. Brammer. Chamomile may be taken as a tea, as a tincture in a vapor tent or may be applied topically.

Growing culinary herbs on your balcony, backyard, or even your windowsill can be a great way to incorporate them into your cooking creations. Cultivating your own is rewarding in its own right — from watching your effort unfold from the sprouting of the seeds to clipping leaves to complement a dish. There's an added bonus: Many herbs are beneficial to the immune system. Using these flavorful and aromatic herbs can give an extra oomph to a meal, as well as your health.

Some herbs are overall immune boosters, while others can help reduce anxiety, stress, tension, and even lift our mood. Reducing stressors or minimizing the effects on your body is equally important in keeping your immune system strong, healthy, and alert.

These six herbs are easy to grow from seed or from a starter plant, and they require minimal care. In a short time, you'll be able to reap the rewards both for your palate and your well-being.

1. Basil

Why It's So Good: Basil, often referred to as Sweet Basil, aids the digestive and nervous systems. If you're dealing with anxiety or stress, it can boost your energy and help release tension. With its antibacterial properties, basil can help ward off infections and colds, too.

Tips for Growing: Basil needs a lot of sunlight and flourishes in warmer climates. It can be tricky to grow in cooler areas or if it gets too much shade, so keep this in mind when choosing a location. You can sow seeds when soil temperatures are at least 50°F, or start indoors. You can also buy starter plants, if you prefer.

Part Used: Leaves

How to Use: Use fresh basil on pizzas, pastas, salads, sandwiches, and sauces (add basil at the very end so it doesn't lose its flavor). You can also make your own pesto sauce.

2. Oregano

Why It's So Good: Oregano has antiseptic properties, which are beneficial for fighting off respiratory infections and digestion issues. Oregano is also useful in reducing nervousness and irritability caused by tension and anxiety.

Tips for Growing: Sow seeds directly into a flat-tray or container with small holes for drainage. Seeds take around five to ten days to sprout. Oregano grows well in most climates and likes plenty of sunlight.

Tips for Growing: Rosemary is a hearty shrub that grows well in containers or directly grown in the ground. You can grow from seed or buy a starter plant. Though rosemary prefers warmer temperatures, it does well in most climates. Make sure wherever you plant it, there is sufficient sunlight.

4. Sage

Why It's So Good: With astringent and antiseptic properties, sage is great for warding off infections, colds, and flus. Sage serves as a good digestive aid and relaxes the nervous system.

Tips for Growing: There are over 500 varieties of sage, but the most prolific garden variety is common garden sage. Sage loves the sun and warm weather. If given the space and right conditions, the herb will grow into a decent size bush, so you'll want to plant accordingly. Buying a starter plant or taking a cutting from another sage plant is ideal since sowing from seeds can be difficult.

5. Thyme

Why It's So Good: There are many varieties of thyme, but the easiest ones to find are common garden thyme or lemon thyme (Thymus Citriodorus), which has a nice fragrant lemon aroma. Thyme is an all-around immune system booster. Because of its antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties, thyme fights off infections and colds. Thyme is also known for calming the nervous system and for easing an upset stomach.

Tips for Growing: You can start from seed or buy a potted plant to get a jump start. You can plant in containers or directly in the soil. Thyme is a hardy plant that likes a decent amount of sun and grows in most climates. Overall, it's a low-maintenance herb that will grow year after.

Tulsi reduces stressors on the body, aids the circulatory system, and also helps with focusing and concentration. Highly regarded in India, this herb is used in a lot of Indian and Asian cuisine, including Thai and Vietnamese.

Tips for Growing: Similar to sweet basil, Tulsi needs a lot of sunlight and thrives in warm and hot weather. You can grow from seed after the chance of frost has passed. Basil grows well in containers.
