How Does Photobiomodulation Work

Photobiomodulation interacts at the cellular level to restore normal cellular function. Mitochondria in the cells start to produce more toxic chemicals displacing oxygen and the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) when we get sick, injured, stress or simply age. This increase in stress on the cells leads to inflammation and cell death.

Red light therapy reverses the cell damage by stimulating the body’s own natural physiological regenerative processes. Cells are repaired and return to their normal functioning, which enhances the body’s ability to heal itself.

Photobiomodulation works in a specific therapeutic dose within a spectrum of light emitted at multiple wavelength to stimulate cellular response. The low level light therapy applies near- and infrared light to activate the healing process.

The non-invasive treatment not only provides relief for acute or chronic pain, but also promotes biostimulation, tissue regeneration, anti-inflammation and reduction in pain. Healthier cells will equate to a quickened response to heal musculoskeletal pains, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, and neurological disorders.

Treatment of Musculoskeletal Dysfunctions

What is the benefit of red light therapy

With oxidative stress being the underlying issue for most diseases and degenerative conditions, LightStim red light therapy stimulates ATP synthesis to normalize and improve cellular function. This in turn activates the body’s healing response in the successful treatment of acute or chronic musculoskeletal pathologies, injury and dysfunction like tendinopathies, osteoarthritis, and neck and lower back pain.

In ankle sprains, for example, photobiomodulation stimulates the lymphatic system to reduce edema or the swelling caused by fluid trapped in tissues. For people with neck pain, the therapy helps to enhance blood flow in myofascial trigger points to reduce tightness and swelling. And for tendonitis, the infrared light therapy works to synthesize collagen which helps to increase flexibility and range of motion.

Other acute or chronic issues that can benefit from red LED therapy include: neck tension, muscle overload, myofascial pain, fibromyalgia, and rheumatoid arthritis, to mention a few. In many instances, the effects of red light therapy can be felt immediately depending on the condition. Multiple sessions are typically required to gain the long-term light therapy benefits of the treatment.

Benefits for Sports Performance and Recovery

What is the benefit of red light therapy

Thanks to its ability to modulate a body’s physiological responses, red light treatment is used widely worldwide by elite and Olympic-level athletes as part of their sports training and recovery. Incorporating the therapy as part of your training regimen will improve muscle performance and will prevent muscle damage following intense workouts. Photobiomodulation has also been shown to reduce biochemical markers such as cytokine, lactate, and creatine kinase, all of which cause muscle inflammation and damage:

  • Inflammatory cytokine concentrations, which is involved in the body’s immune response and defence against harmful agents
  • Low blood lactate, which disrupts flow and oxygen at the cellular level
  • Muscle damage produced by excess creatine kinase levels in the blood

Athletes use performance as an objective measure in training – to increase energy, recover faster from injuries, and reduce muscle soreness are just some of the benefits of the therapy.

Infrared and red light therapy works at the cellular level to restore cell mitochondria homeostasis. It prevents exercise-related cell damage and improves the post-training recovery to boost strength and muscle function. The light therapy induces the production of ATP and oxygen consumption to promote cellular regeneration. It promotes cell growth and recovery from injury by elevating nitric oxide, which improves blood flow – an integral component for health and healing.

Beyond enhancing top-athletic performance, LightStim red light therapy is also used to treat common sports injuries such as plantar fasciitis and muscle sprains for athletes of all levels from the novice runner to a weekend warrior.

Holistic Benefits of Red Light Therapy

What is the benefit of red light therapy

Red light therapy may be an amazing complementary modality for the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and a tool to improve sports performance, but the therapeutic benefits for overall wellness are many.

Oxidative stress is the primary imbalance in the body’s inability to detoxify against the harmful effects of free radicals. It is the underlying factor in aging and most disease and degenerative conditions. With collagen as the main component of the skin, the non-toxic therapy stimulates collagen production and increases antioxidants, thereby assisting in regenerative wound healing, skin elasticity, and the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis.

LightStim is FDA cleared to treat wrinkles on your forehead, crow’s feet, cheeks, nasolabial folds, jawline and lips to nourish the skin from the inside to maintain your skin’s youthful appearance.

The beneficial effects of red light therapy can also enhance cognitive processes. Studies have indicated that it helps to release certain brain compounds that positively improve the mood. Research has also shown that photobiomodulation can activate melatonin to improve sleep quality and duration.

Overall, Photobiomodulation Red Light Therapy displaces the oxidative stress and triggers a positive downstream cascading effect to activate to the body’s natural cellular repair to normalize its capacity to heal.

LightStim MultiWave® Red Light Therapy FAQ

Why Is FDA Clearance Important?

With almost 6 years in development, the LightStim Bed is the first and only full-body light therapy LED Bed to legally obtain FDA Clearance. Our bed is FDA cleared for temporary relief of muscle and joint pain, arthritic pain and stiffness and increased blood circulation.

The FDA requires that you raise and maintain tissue temperature of the entire body to a specific level. As the limbs of the body have less mass, they require more heat to reach the same temperature as the torso. LightStim’s patented LED modules with temperature sensors, constantly monitor each part of the body and adjust on a millisecond basis to maintain consistent and adequate temperature throughout the entire treatment. This is the LightStim difference, as the technology provides uniform blood circulation throughout the body.

How Is LightStim MultiWave® Patented Technology Different?

Our results can be attributed to our LightStim Multiwave patented technology, which simultaneously emits multiple wavelengths (colors) of light. These wavelengths of light work together to increase local blood circulation, so your body can naturally relieve pain and promote total body wellness. The LightStim bed has 4 distinct wavelengths: 630 & 660nm red, and 855 & 940nm infrared.

What’s the Recommended Frequency for Most Clients to Achieve Optimal Benefits?

The LightStim LED Bed is FDA Cleared for as little as 5 minutes or as much as 30 minutes per side of the body. The normal mode of the device is set for 20 minutes per side for optimal results. Light therapy is very much like a healthy diet, proper water intake, exercise, or meditation. You may not feel much difference after eating one healthy meal but eating well habitually has profound effects on everything from energy levels to immune function. It’s possible you won’t feel anything dramatic after a single treatment; however, the body’s cells have, in fact, absorbed specific wavelengths of therapeutic light energy shown to trigger many beneficial processes.

Some report feeling “energized”, while others observe a “sense of calm”. Those who are in pain often notice distinct relief after only one treatment. As with other healthy routines, these benefits are cumulative. The bed can be used every single day. Elite athletes may often use the LightStim bed 3 times a day, but for most clients, once a week will improve overall cellular function.

What Are the Benefits of a Single-Sided, Full-Body Design?

The LightStim bed is uniquely designed with only one surface instead of a top and bottom. Turning over halfway through the treatment allows the body to get as close to LEDs as possible for better light absorption and superior results.

In order to gain proper depth of penetration, your body must be less than 3/4 an inch away from the tip of the bulb. That is why a one-sided design increases the benefits of red light therapy. We are treating both sides of the body, but it is made so that you are as close to the tip of the bulb as possible. The bed delivers red and infrared therapeutic light energy all the way down to your muscles, joints and organs, which is necessary to be able to obtain optimal results.

Why Does the Angle and Proprietary Acrylic Lens Matter?

LightStim’s proprietary acrylic lens eliminates any distortion of the required 10 to 50 degrees angle of light being emitted, which is necessary to achieve adequate depth of penetration for obtaining results.

How Does Red Light Therapy Improve ATP and Nitric Oxide Synthesis?

Use of wavelengths that our cells naturally convert to adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the fuel source of the cell. ATP fuels healthy biological function. Studies show that light therapy helps to release trapped nitric oxide (NO) from cells, making it available for use within the body.

Loss of NO contributes to age-related disease, including hypertension, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and diabetes.

What Are the Main Benefits of Red Light Therapy for Athletes?
