Why do i get so sleepy when i read

I love reading but I feel like I'm often fighting a war against sleep while trying to read. I don't get it, I can even pick up a book feeling wide awake and 10 minutes later I feel like I can't stay awake and then I slowly chug to the end of the chapter in between times of nodding off. Then I pick up my book the next day and realize I don't remember anything that happened in the last chapter because I was half asleep getting through it.

Any tips to prevent nodding off?

Why do i get so sleepy when i read

level 1

  • Read sitting up.

  • Read somewhere well-lit.

  • Read a book you're interested in.

  • Don't read in bed or lying down.

  • If you find yourself feeling sleepy, take a sip of cold water. It might help to make you feel more awake.

  • If you truly are tired, don't read - you should be well-rested. Don't train yourself into nodding off every time you pick up a book!

level 2

Read it sitting up, Read it sitting down.

Read it with your pup, Read with something brown.

You could read it with a bear, Read it really quick,

Once you've made your pick, You could read it anywhere!

I don't know why I made this

Audiobooks are also a good option for commutes and being hands free, and less work on tired eyes when you're desperate to read the next page

If you're honestly getting that tired, and you're unable to remember because you're half asleep reading, you probably should go to sleep once you start feeling sleepy. You're likely running without enough sleep, something your body lets you know when you get comfortable (reading).

So my suggestions would be: get more sleep and read at other times in addition to before bed.

Sometimes I walk while I read. Honestly I get most of my reading done when I'm walking on a treadmill

level 2

I used to do this at the gym, I read a lot more back then

level 1

Maybe your body is telling you to get more sleep.

I don't think there is anyway to beat this. Just get more sleep at night: go to bed earlier and stick to that time all week.

level 1

If you are sleepy, sleep. Then read after you wake up. Your mind will be fresh and will absorb better.

level 1

Sleep enough so that you don't fall asleep the moment you get comfortable with a book.

Every time you start to feel drowsy, hit yourself in the head with a rock.

I only read books on weekends/holidays because I have don't sleep enough on weekdays tonight stay awake while reading :/

level 1

I listen to audiobooks before bed. More peaceful for me and I don't have to strain tired eyes. I can just listen and drift into the story.

level 1

Read with intention and take few notes. They'll boost your focus.

level 1

I struggle with this myself. I find I have the most energy after I eat supper, or in the early evening. Maybe you could try fitting in a couple hours there?

level 1

read an interesting and engaging book, or just drink heaps of coffee :)

level 1

Read in the morning with breakfast (and tea/ coffee).

level 1

I usually take notes, outline a chapter or create some sort of chart of events and/or character relationships as I read. Really helps to focus my mind and better remember events since I have notes handy and don't have to go digging if I want to remember what happened. Furthermore, it's really useful to have if you choose to write a review later on.

I know always that I am an outsider; a stranger in this century

If you take public transport read there, stick on some classical music so you don't focus on the lyrics then enjoy the story.

level 2

I don't think that's necessarily the problem. I have a similar issue, and its not because I find the books uninteresting. My mind will be all "this is amazing!!!" but my eyes are like "Fuck this shit, you are sleepy now."

level 1

Question what if it's the opposite whenever I read before bed I am guaranteed not to sleep for some reason I feel more energetic and it frequently ruins my sleep schedule since i stay up reading all night.
