I took my Cherokee into the dealer because of a knock/rattle coming from the passenger side front corner. They agreed it definitely has a suspension noise and ordered a new front strut for it. The service writer and the mechanic both said they've seen this in the KL's before. Anyone else have a noisy strut replaced?

Also, I had the two latest (minor?) PCM and TCM updates done. The Jeep now downshifts into 2nd much more quickly and smoothly. Before it was laboring in 3rd on steep hills.

I took my Cherokee back to the dealer today because the new strut came in. They had it changed in a couple hours. The knock/rattle is gone. I asked the mechanic if it was the strut or something else and he said it was the strut. Something must have come apart internally.

While I was there, there was another guy waiting with an almost identical '15 Limited, down to the color. He was there for the exact same repair - a noise in the right front due to a bad strut. The dealer said that they have replaced several of these so I'm surprised that no one replied to my original post.

BTW, I was watching as the mechanic tightened my lug nuts (including the locking one) with an impact wrench. He may have been using one of those torque limiting extensions but I couldn't see. I checked the torque when I got home and the bolts were a little uneven but not too bad. Also, I asked if they did a wheel alignment and was told they don't do that for a strut replacement. Since they didn't mess with the tie rods I guess that's acceptable. I know I've replaced struts myself without an alignment and it was fine. If I notice any uneven tire wear I'll be back there right away.

I'm just happy that the annoying rattle is gone!

I use to have a 2.4l limited build date 6/14. Has to have strut replaced back in April. Traded in for Trailhawk (what I originally wanted).

I had that exact strut replaced just two weeks ago. There was a very strong vibration at speeds above about 60 kph and the vehicle seemed to hammer down hard when hitting even the smallest bump or pothole. Seemed almost as if there was a complete failure of the strut even though on visual inspection, everything seemed to be fine.

In my case the shock damping seemed fine and there was no vibration, just a noise. It seemed like maybe a piston in the strut assembly got loose on its shaft and was banging around.

At under 1000 miles, I started getting a larger and larger noise from the left front that started on some bumps and then went to virtually all bumps by 2000 miles (over 900 from two long highway drives so not beating it up on city potholes). The service tech seemed perplexed. The tech looked at it. Service tech said I had a leaky strut and it had to be ordered, 3-5 days. I got the truck back and gee, guess what, they replaced the strut, retainer, two isolators, and the mount. The tech kind of mumbled about the details, but said they just decided to replace all of it so it should be good to go. He is new, doesn't keep up known issues, or needs acting lessons. Whatever, the vehicle is now quiet to drive again.

My struts were noisy a few weeks after delivery, the dealer replaced them, and they have been fine since then. I'm now over 50k miles.

I described it to the service writer like the sound of an old shock at 100,000 miles, like a deep metallic thud, a single impact noise for each bump hit. Not a high pitch metallic clang, and not a plastic body work flap or thump, something that was pretty solid. The other comparison was an old ball joint noise, or a loose caliper (don't ask how I know that one). I also found it happening when I was backing up and hit the brakes, it would thump right as the vehicle was stopping.

I've had issues with this since I purchased the car in 2015. Each time the dealer said they can't recreate the problem. Until yesterday when I called the service manager directly. They are replacing the struts as well as the thermostat that went up after 17 months. I can't believe the number of issues this vehicle has.

100,000 mile service, they told me my front struts were totally obliterated, and I believe them, especially after driving a rental car for 3 days. The struts degraded slowly, so I didn't notice, but I sure do now. How much SHOULD it cost to get all news shocks and struts installed? I won't tell you the estimate they gave me, but it seems 2x higher than it should be.

Hi jclo02,

If you decide you'd like to get this looked at by the dealer, let us know. We're available via direct message and would be happy to help with that process.
