But if you're having a destination wedding out of the country or heading to France for your honeymoon, then it's important to factor in a passport renewal if you're due. The good news is it may sound like a hassle, but get it done and you'll feel so good about crossing the task off your wedding checklist. Plus, passport renewals are much easier than getting a new passport. Read on for tips on US passport renewal.

How to Renew a Passport

If you're in need of a passport renewal, there are a few options. You can apply for renewal by mail, online or in person if you have less than two weeks before your wedding or trip.

According to Travel.State.gov, you can renew your passport by mail if:

1. Your passport is undamaged and can be submitted with your application.

2. Your passport was issued when you were 16 years or older.

3. Your passport was issued within the last 15 years.

5. Your passport was issued in your current name or you can legally document your name change with original or certified copy of your marriage certificate or government-issued document with evidence of name change.

How to Renew a Passport by Mail or Online

If you choose to complete the renewal form online, note that you still need to mail the form in to the processing center.

1. Fill out the DS-82 passport renewal form. Print it here and fill it out by hand or complete it online and print the final form to mail in.

2. Submit your most recent US passport book or card with the DS-82 form. Your old passport book will be returned to you by mail and may be returned separately from your new passport.

3. Submit a certified copy of your marriage certificate or court order if your name has changed.

4. Pay the passport renewal fee. Fees differ depending on the age of the applicant (minors are charged less than adults), and if you've requested expedited service, additional pages added to your passport or a file search (required if you're unable to present evidence of citizenship). Use Travel.State.gov to estimate the cost of fees for your renewal. You can pay by money order payable to "Department of State" or checks (personal, certified, cashier's or traveler's). Do not send cash!

5. Provide one passport photo. Photo should be stapled to the application. Travel.State.gov recommends using four staples in the corners to get as close to the outer edges as possible. Be careful not to bend the photo.

6. Last step—send it off! Use an envelope large enough to fit your application without having to fold it. Travel.State.gov recommends you track your shipment so personal documents do not get lost. Note: The mailing address is different for expedited service (which usually takes around three weeks) versus routine service (which can take four to six weeks).

For Expedited Service:
Be sure to write "EXPEDITE" clearly on the outside of the mailing envelope. Mail completed application to:
National Passport Processing Center
Post Office Box 90955
Philadelphia, PA 19190-0955

For Routine Service:
National Passport Processing Center
Post Office Box 90155
Philadelphia, PA 19190-0155

Note: If you're applying for a US passport renewal from outside the US, it's a different process. See here.
