It seems like everyone has a streaming service nowadays. You can add Apple to that list, with the launch of their own original video streaming app, Apple TV+.

Apple TV+ is available on nearly every streaming device around, including Roku, as well as online through a web browser, and in an app for iPhone and iPad.

Apple TV+ is competing for your attention with existing services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and HBO Max — but is cheaper than any of them.

How much is Apple TV+?

Apple TV+ costs $6.99 a month, after a seven-day free trial.

If you buy a new iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Apple TV, or Mac computer, you automatically get three months of the service for free.

What you get in an Apple TV+ subscription

Apple TV+ is ad-free, all content is available for streaming on demand, and can be downloaded locally so you can watch it offline if you know you'll be somewhere without internet access.

However, Apple is not alone in its recent price increase. Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu all increased their prices in 2022 and are launching cheaper, ad-supported plans.

One reason Apple's streaming service is priced so affordably is that there's no back catalog — unlike Netflix, Apple has made no mention of licensing any TV shows or movies for its new service. It's all original content.

For the first time since it bowed in November 2019, Apple TV+ is increasing its price tag.

Beginning today, new and existing subscribers will now pay $6.99 per month for access to the streaming service, a 40-percent hike from its initial $4.99 monthly cost.

Also on the rise is the price of Apple Music, which is now $10.99 (previously $9.99) per month for the individual plan. Apple Music’s family plan, which was previously $14.99 per month, is now $16.99.

For those who enjoy a more robust portfolio, the Apple One bundle — which includes Apple TV+, Apple Music, Apple News+, Apple Fitness+ and iCloud+ and Apple Arcade — has risen from $14.95 to $16.95.

“The subscription prices for Apple Music, Apple TV+, and Apple One will increase beginning today,” Apple said in a statement to TVLine. “The change to Apple Music is due to an increase in licensing costs, and in turn, artists and songwriters will earn more for the streaming of their music. We also continue to add innovative features that make Apple Music the world’s best listening experience. We introduced Apple TV+ at a very low price because we started with just a few shows and movies. Three years later, Apple TV+ is home to an extensive selection of award-winning and broadly acclaimed series, feature films, documentaries, and kids and family entertainment from the world’s most creative storytellers.”

Apple’s price hike was first reported by 9to5Mac. Do you feel these services are worth their new, higher costs? Drop your thoughts in a comment below.

Our definitive guide to Apple TV Plus. (Image credit: WhatToWatch.com)

Apple TV Plus is the flagship streaming service that was, unsurprisingly, launched by Apple to ensure it wasn't left out of the ever-growing streaming market.  With it, the tech company best known for creating the iPhone and computers moved into the entertainment business in a big way.

While Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video have been around for a long time now, the streaming revolution has really taken off in the last handful of years with the emergence of streaming platforms like BritBox, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Peacock, and Apple TV Plus.

Apple TV Plus is a bit different from some of those other services, though, as it does not rely on a library of classic TV shows and movies. Instead, Apple's streaming service is entirely built upon an offering of exclusive, original TV shows and movies, with new things to watch coming along roughly every single month.

Below we break down everything that you need to know about Apple TV Plus, from what’s on it to how much it costs and how you can start watching.

How much does Apple TV Plus cost?

As of October 24, Apple TV Plus saw its first price increase, with the monthly fee rising from $4.99 per month to $6.99 per month in the US, with comparable price increases taking place internationally as well.

The price is effective immediately for new subscribers, while current subscribers will see the increase reflected in their next monthly billing statement (though you should be getting a 30 day notice for it).

While Apple TV Plus is now more expensive than previously comparable ad-supported versions of Peacock Premium and Paramount Plus, except there still aren't any ads on Apple TV Plus.

Aside from a basic Apple TV Plus subscription, there's also the option to bundle Apple TV Plus as part of an Apple One subscription (which also saw a price increase of $2 for individual accounts and $3 for family accounts).

Apple One is a package that allows consumers to bundle an Apple TV Plus subscription with up to five other Apple services (between Apple Music, Apple Arcade, iCloud Plus, Apple News Plus and Apple Fitness Plus) in a single monthly subscription.

There are three different Apple One packages (opens in new tab), but all three of them include Apple TV Plus. Pricing for the cheapest option starts at $16.95 per month, but the more expensive Family and Premier plans offer additional Apple Services and include the option of sharing your subscription with up to five other people.

If you're already subscribed to some of Apple's other services but want to pick up Apple TV Plus too, it's definitely worth considering whether an Apple One package might be right for you.

Whichever way you subscribe, you can cancel an Apple TV Plus can cancel their Apple TV Plus subscription at any time.

Is there an Apple TV Plus free trial?

If you aren't sure whether you want to commit to another subscription, Apple offers new subscribers a seven-day free trial for Apple TV Plus for new customers. If you're in the market for a new phone or computer, you can get a longer free trial of the service if you purchase a new Apple device. If you pick up an iPhone, iPad, Mac computer, or other Apple hardware, you'll get three months of Apple TV Plus access for free (opens in new tab) from now until October 31, 2022.

Do remember that a paid subscription will automatically start at the conclusion of these longer trial periods unless you cancel your plan beforehand.

Students should also note that anyone with an Apple Music Student Plan gets Apple TV Plus for free.

What's on Apple TV Plus?

Ultimately, the most important thing to consider (besides the price) when it comes to picking up a new streaming service is what's available to watch. Luckily, Apple TV Plus has a solid range to choose from.

As we mentioned above, the Apple TV Plus library is a little different from most other streaming services, as it's comprised entirely of original content. To compensate for the lack of classic programming, Apple has splashed a lot of cash on developing original content and acquiring titles to serve as Apple TV Plus exclusives, including gripping dramas, hilarious comedies, fascinating documentaries, and fun kids shows.

When Apple TV Plus first launched in November 2019, the selection was a little thin. Since then, the offering has grown significantly, and a decent number of Apple TV Plus's shows and movies have become big hits.

Recent big hitters include the psychological thriller series, Severance, Best Picture winner, CODA, spy drama Slow Horses, Cooper Raiff's Cha Cha Real Smooth, sci-fi drama For All Mankind and warm-hearted comedy Ted Lasso, which is arguably the service's most well-known series so far.
