Pros & Cons are excerpts from user reviews. They are not authored by Glassdoor.

  1. Current Employee, more than 1 year

    Pros

Progressive company that allows work flexibility and a 37 (!!!) hour work week! The group I work with is amazing and super-supportive. Plus, in addition to the 37-hour work week (which amounts to almost 20 days off in the year!), the benefits program is amazing!

    Cons

The work can be intense but that's expected when working for a publicly-traded company, and we're rewarded for our hard work!

  2. Former Employee, more than 3 years

    Pros

The benefit is great (Health, Dental, and Vision). ESOP, 401k match, and generous PTO. Has full flexibility to WFH, in-office, or hybrid.

    Cons

The pay can be better to match the industry.

  4. Current Employee, more than 1 year

    Pros

Only work till 1 pm on Fridays, great benefits, generous PTO, bonuses throughout the year. Co-workers are great. I feel they care about their employees.

    Cons

The company is going through a lot of changes and that has led to a lot of people leaving. I like the new CEO and feel he is trying to do his best to move our company forward. However, the technology departments are very siloed and there is no vision for how to perform the needed upgrades. I feel the company needs to hire more developers to help us get our servers upgraded and to finish some much-needed enhancement projects. Also, the pay needs to be increased. For senior positions, it is way below what other companies are paying. You need to pay for your talent so they don't leave!

  5. Current Employee, more than 1 year

    Pros

Whole team was like a family with managers listening to their employees.

    Cons

Unfortunately our department canceled commercial mortgage line business and had massive lay offs across the team. The company is going through a lot of transitioning which comes at huge costs to employees. Growth is limited as there aren't many tiers/levels within departments.

  6. Current Employee, more than 1 year

    Pros

I have worked for several companies, both large and small. American Equity has been the best experience as an employee by far. We can start with the usual pros: Great benefits, paid vacation, paid volunteer time, competitive salaries, lots of employee engagement, predictable schedules, and off at 1 PM. on Fridays. What's more important, however, is the team-first atmosphere that trickles down from leadership to me as an employee. I have never once felt like I am less important than anyone else. There is a ton of flexibility built in, and managers are generally very understanding if something comes up and you need to leave early or take the day. I feel like my work here matters, and my job as an employee in the grand scheme of things is valued. My managers care about my development as a professional and making me better in what I do every day. I have been able to access different tools to improve my work and was able to use feedback as a driver for success. This is a top down culture, driven by valueing employees, no matter the position, and making sure everyone has what they need to succeed.

    Cons

Sometimes I wish we had more touchpoints with company leadership but in my almost two years here, they have made continous efforts to increase ELT visibility and communications. While remote work is possibile and has the support of most managers, the company is lacking a consistent policy that applies to everyone. Often times, we don't know who is going to be in the office or not because schedules change so much and people make individual decisions on when to come in and when not. However, as mentioned, remote work continuous to be an option for those who chose to stay home.

  7. Current Employee, more than 5 years

    Pros

I absolutely love my job. I feel challenged and supported by my leader as well as by my coworkers and team members. Lots of growth available. I enjoy working in an environment that values personal and professional growth, and I’ve loved watching my team members get promoted in to other roles in the company. Amazing benefits. The company truly cares for every single employee. Environment is very fast paced, and while projects and objectives may change very quickly, if you can go with the flow a bit you’ll be just fine.

    Cons

Lots of opportunity to streamline processes, but otherwise can’t think of anything!

    Horrible Company

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Occasional departmental outings and dinners on the company dime.

    Cons

This company is horrible, never work here. The company is constantly striving to cut costs which leads to an environment where the actuarial department is constantly understaffed and over worked. The incentive system is such that management and executives are constantly is trying to decieve employees in order to get them to work as many hours as possible. They promise a 37 hour week and 160+ hours of PTO. But they don't tell you is you only get that if you complete 50-70 hours worth of work every week. I was regularly given 20 hour projects Friday afternoon and told they were due by Monday morning.. Employees are regularly asked to cancel vacations and explicitly told that individually taken PTO days are to be made up on the weekend. The turn over is extreme, so almost no one stays longer than a year. Management blatantly lies about promotions and raises as a means to motivate employees to work harder. People get fired regularly for seemingly no reason. On top of all that, the company has a few business practices in the way they treat their customers that I percieve to be blatantly fraudulent and preying on our societies more valuable senior citizens.
